Business Case

Training Helicopter Technicians
in Malawi

Project overview and background

Airbus Helicopters was asked to retrofit and maintain several helicopters.

To satisfy this demand, it was imperative to train Malawian army mechanics so that they could work effectively on these aircraft on a daily basis. It was against this backdrop that NOVAE, with its expertise in this field, was called in.

NOVAE, in collaboration with Airbus Helicopters, has designed and delivered two training courses for Malawi Air Force maintenance technicians. The courses were designed to enhance the technicians' skills in the mechanical maintenance of single-engine Ecureuil helicopters (AS550 A2) and avionics systems.

Mission details

  • Developed courses: Avionics and helicopter mechanics.
  • Participants: 8 participants for the mechanical course and 5 for the avionics course.
  • Duration: 2 months of pedagogical engineering followed by 3 weeks of training for each course.
  • Pedagogical approach: Courses included theoretical and practical phases, as well as exams to assess trainees' skills and validate prior learning.

Project execution

The courses were developed from the manufacturer's data, with common elements such as syllabus, practical worksheets and exams. Each week of training combined a theoretical phase with practical tasks and assessments.

Key points

  • Involvement of two qualified NOVAE instructors on the aircraft concerned, and a project manager for project management, logistics and administrative follow-up.
  • Close collaboration with Airbus Helicopters to ensure content relevance and respect for deadlines.

« There was great collaboration with Novae who provided customized training programs that contributed to enhancing safety in our region and helped improve our customers' satisfaction. »

Impact and results

Following the training, the technicians reinforced their skills through an on-the-job training phase. The main objective was to make them autonomous in helicopter maintenance, while raising their awareness of flight safety and the importance of their work for aircraft reliability.

Key results

  • 100% success rate for trainees
  • Skills training for technicians to ensure more confident and autonomous intervention on helicopters.
  • Increased awareness of flight safety and the impact of their work on machine reliability.

Perspectives

This project augurs well for NOVAE's future prospects on the African continent and internationally in similar formats, combining educational engineering and technical training.
