Business Case

E-learning on non-compliances
in the nuclear sector

Project overview and background

In the nuclear energy sector, the management of non-compliances for Nuclear Pressure Equipment (NPE) is crucial to safety and standards compliance. Players in the industry must follow strict methodologies to ensure that such equipment complies with regulatory requirements.

NOVAE has collaborated with EDF, FRAMATOME, AFCEN and the French Nuclear Energy Manufacturers' Group (GIFEN) to develop an innovative e-learning module entitled “Methodological approach to dealing with NPE NON-COMPLIANCES. This launch is a first for GIFEN, the trade association representing the entire French nuclear industry.

This module enables learners to familiarize themselves with the AFCEN Technical Publication (PTAN) (AFCEN-PTAN-01001-2022) concerning NPE N1. It is intended for all operational staff and their organizations actively involved in dealing with non-compliances.

This approach allows:

  • Handle and correct non-compliances in a reactive, rigorous and graduated manner;
  • Gather and use feedback to avoid any recurrence.

Client issue

The main challenge for companies like EDF and FRAMATOME is to ensure that all professionals have the common knowledge to apply PTAN correctly. AFCEN's PTAN must be recognized and applied by all, with the aim of “getting it right first time”.

The challenge was therefore to promote the publication of the methodological approach in a dynamic and interactive way in order to favor its appropriation by users.

Mission details

NOVAE's main mission was to design and develop an interactive e-learning module to promote the PTAN methodology.

  1. Needs analysis: collaborating with EDF, FRAMATOME, AFCEN and GIFEN to understand the specific requirements and expectations of end users. This included gathering expressions of requirements and taking them into detailed account.
  2. Production of promotional video: create a dynamic promotional video to introduce the methodology and raise user awareness of the importance of dealing with N1 NPE non-compliances.
  3. E-learning production: translate the requirements and key messages of the PTAN methodology into interactive and engaging educational content. This involved creating scenarios, animations and visual aids to illustrate the principles and processes clearly and concisely.

Developed solutions

A 3-minute promotional video, a 25-minute e-learning course and a summary sheet. These solutions are available on the website for GIFEN members.

Pedagogical approach

Implement an active, dynamic and meaningful pedagogy to arouse interest, involve the learner and facilitate memory anchoring.

“What I retain from our collaboration with NOVAE is the quality of the project follow-up organization we put in place, both during the phase of recovering the expression of need and taking it into account, and during the translation workshops and transformation of the need into the final digital educational solution.

Indeed, with Christophe, you were able to identify the key messages and requirements of the approach to be highlighted by the teaching tool. On this basis, your “implementation” team was able to translate and animate how the methodology should be unfolded in order to deal effectively with non-compliances.

The work we've done has enabled us 1) to promote the publication of the methodological approach in a dynamic way via the promotional video, 2) to make the presentation and unfolding of the methodology contained in the PTAN guide dynamic, 3) to imagine a follow-up to this e-learning with the creation of an “ESPN saga” where Mado and Firmin could be asked to intervene on other subjects/themes concerning ESPN regulations.”

Report & benefits

E-learning EDF ESPN

The training course has been recognized and distributed by AFCEN.

All players in the French nuclear industry now have a better understanding of the issues involved, as well as the various steps and activities required to deal effectively with non-compliances. Everyone is doing their part to improve the culture of dealing with non-compliances.

By mobilizing the entire industry, we'll be able to strengthen production security and nuclear safety, thereby helping to avoid such situations.

In short, the project has not only effectively disseminated the PTAN methodology, but also boosted the training of professionals in the sector. Non-compliances are better managed, and this contributes to the safety and compliance of nuclear pressure equipment.
